Romping Stomping Historic Video: Check Out This Amazing Footage Of Drag Racing Legends In 427 Comets And Thunderbolts

Like so many awesome developments in Ford’s 1960s drag racing history, Tasca Ford can claim some credit for the creation of what would be known as the Thunderbolt. They started by stuffing a 406 into a Fairlane in 1962 and followed it up with a 427 in another Fairlane in 1963 and ultimately that effort culminated in Ford seizing the chance to expand on the idea by creating the legendary Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt in 1964. These are my favorite factory drag cars of all time and they can still be found terrorizing the strip at NHRA national events and at other meets across the country. Back in the 1960s it was a matter of drag strip survival that these cars were made to exist. After being beat up by the Pontiacs and Mopars of the same time frame and seeing efforts like the lightweight Galaxies come up short, they had to do something. Boy did they ever.

Getting these cars into the specific hands of the best racers in the Ford fold changed the game. In this video you will see guys like Dyno Don Nicholson, Bill Lawton, Butch Leal, Ronnie Sox, Jack Chrisman, Al Joniec, and others plying the trade on drag strips large and small (mostly small) across the country.

The video is not just Thunderbolts, though. In fact it opens with amazing footage of Chrisman in the famed Sachs and Sons Mercury Comet with its blown engine smoking the tires of an eternity at the US Nationals. The 8mm footage is backed with some tunes but wow is this whole thing awesome. The Sachs and Sons cars is called the first funny car by many and when we look at what happened in 1965, it’s hard to argue. 1964 was awesome but 1965 was bonkers with multiple fuel burning, blown, stock bodied cars hitting drag strips and drawing massive crowds. About a half dozen of them showed up at the nationals that year and were relegated to the B/Fuel Dragster category because at that time, anything that ran on nitro was lumped into a dragster category and relegated by weight.

If you love the raw history of Ford performance, you will love this video. Seeing these OG 427 Comets and Thunderbolts throwing down is just great. Lots of Chrysler products in the other lane of these runs which is exactly what the Blue Oval gang was hoping for. It was drag strip war.

Awesomely Weird: This 1970s Chevrolet Parts Film Stars Evel Knievel And Literally Makes No Sense

We’re guessing someone lost their job for this one. You are going to watch this 1970s Chevrolet parts film which stars Evel Knivel and makes literally no sense at all. The theme of the film is “conflict” and it is illustrated by a series of scenes where animals eat other animals, black and white movies are shown, and Evel Knievel jumps stuff on his motorcycle, sometimes crashing, sometimes not. Throw in a dose of 1970s Anchoman-level hilarity with a bikini-clad woman, and you have yourself one of the most singular odd things we have ever seen.

Make no mistake, Knievel would never turn down a gig, especially one with Chevrolet that likely was a great payday for reading some cue-cards. The company definitely did not hire him for his suave acting ability because this dude is straight up stiff while narrating the action. By action, we mean the bizarre things we are shown on screen.

Oddly, while Chevrolet parts are mentioned a handful of times there’s barely (if ever) a Chevrolet car shown as a prop in the film. This whole thing is some weirdo theater of the mind that was likely schemed up by an executive’s kid. “Hey Johnson, get my son a job in the media department and let him run wild!”

Obviously, Knievel was majorly famous at this point and his star only grew bigger. Note that he mentions that someday, “I’ll jump a mile….” we all know how that quest ended.

You have to see this one to believe it.

Ever Wonder How They Make Wooden Airplane Props? Check Out These Two Ladies From Culver Props As They Take Us Through The Entire Process

Airplanes are bitchin machines, and were instrumental in the design and components used on some of the earliest hot rods. So it is no wonder that gearheads are often attracted to the cool shapes and lines that come on classic and military airplanes. And what’s cooler than the sexy wooden propeller hanging off the front of a neat old airplane? If someone asked what it took to build one, it would take a few minutes to think about all the steps and critical shaping that is required to make one from scratch. But now, you and I can watch one getting made, step by step, by two talented craftswomen from Missouri who build every single prop that comes out of Culver Props in Rolla, Missouri. I stumbled onto their YouTube channel and saw that they are starting a series on what it takes to make a new prop, and how the days progress during the build process.

I for one am excited to see what this cool prop will look like when done, seeing as it is made from several layers of Maple. Laminating wood like this not only produces a beautiful layered look, but also provides more strength and stability than if the prop were made from one solid block of wood.

Speed and Sound: Watch A Late 1970s F1 Car with a Cosworth DFV V8 Engine Attack Goodwood!

It’s a pretty familiar story in the world of racing, right? Son of operator/owner of large successful company is a talented race car driver and wants to compete at highest levels, company invests money into program, program not that successful, program goes away. Such was the nutshell explanation of David Purely and the LEC Refrigeration Formula One outfit that competed in 1973 and 1977. The car you are going to see here is the 1977 era machine that is powered by an absolutely symphonic sounding Cosworth DFV V8 engine. These cars are some of our favorites with the “big n’ little” tires and cool shovel nose pieces.

Purley’s relatively undecorated Formula One career is less known for podium finishes and more known for personal toughness. It was in 1973 at the Dutch Grand Prix that David Purley stopped and got out of his car to try and prevent fellow racer Roger Williamson from burning to death in his overturned car. The famous footage shows Purley trying to get track workers and fellow racers to help him, all to no avail. Williamson died in the car. In 1977 Purley and his team made their own F1 entry, the CRP1. This car was a good one but at the British Grand Prix Purley suffered a stuck throttle and piled into a wall at 108mph, coming to a stop 26 inches after impact and experiencing nearly 180 Gs of force. Shockingly he lived but was badly injured.

This car ripping up Goodwood and doing so in “low ET” fashion is just amazing. It may not have won much on the track but this baby is a ripper!

History Lesson: The 1980s Front-Drive Offerings In The Name Of Performance

Look into the past and you will see a lot of ghosts of cars past, cars that were meant to make an impact. Some did, some didn’t. They were everywhere, then suddenly they were nowhere to be found except in the most forgotten corners of the lots in BFE, U.S.A. Some of these cars could’ve been the first evolution for markets that existed later in life, if it wasn’t for manufacturers that didn’t take them seriously. Actually, scratch that…even if they did, the market didn’t. But let’s look at the subject matter…

Remember the Dodge Daytona? No, not the Charger…the front-drive K-car that tried like hell to give the Fox Mustang and the third-gen F-bodies something to think about. Considering that Chrysler had narrowly escaped Death’s scythe just a few years ago, it was impressive that the company had cranked out a competent hatchback coupe front-driver that had style, power, and sex appeal. If it wasn’t for the torque steer, Mopar was on par for yet another early take on hot FWD performance, along with the Shelby GLHS Charger and Omni, the Shelby CSX, and other hot takes. Mopar got Shelby to tweak their cars and you would think that with the hot turbocharged 2.2L four, that they would’ve stuck around a little longer than they did.

The Ford EXP is harder to quantify, but you have to understand: these things were EVERYWHERE for years, before they all suddenly turned to dust and ceased to exist. The EXP never really tried to be a true performance machine…you either bought one with a touch of luxury flair, or one with a touch of sporty flair. And unlike the Daytona, the EXP was a two-seater, which was a problem unto itself when it came to insuring it. Yeah…two-seater equals sports car, regardless of how mundane the roots are. It’s an Escort through and through, bug-eye or AeroEXP, and the benefits and problems of that base bled through. The EXP did have one thing going for it: for the size, it was properly useable for an all-around daily use. You had a huge cargo compartment, you had an engine that would move it…kind of…and if you didn’t try to kick it around, you had a competent, economical car that didn’t look bad.

Historical Drag Racing Video: Mario Andretti Drag Racing For The Only Time In His Life At Connecticut Dragway!

This right here is some stuff! The first part of the video seems to date from the first half of the 1960s but the last half comes from 1968 and there’s one really specific way that we know that. This is rare footage of Mario Andretti drag racing for the only time in his life at Connecticut Dragway in 1968.

You will see him landing on the strip in a little Cessna, hanging out with the trophy queen and ultimately see him making laps in a Mustang on behalf of Tasca Ford! Andretti ran a match race against track owner Frank Maratta who is driving a Camaro prepared by Norwood Chevrolet. To double down on the awesome, the car that Andretti is likely a Tasca KR8, the car that the production Cobra Jet Mustangs were based off of! Surely they would not have stuck Mario in some 390 powered Mustang, right? He got the good stuff we’re sure.

There’s plenty of other fun stuff to be seen here in the form of wheel standers and loads of awesome cars but the real story if Mario. Recently on television he talked about this particular day and his memories all these years later are 100% spot on, the video proves it! You will see him fly in around the 13:00 minute mark and his runs against Maratta are shown around the 15:00 mark.
