Happy Father’s Day From All Of Us At BangShift.com!

He handed me my first car while I was still crawling around in the shag carpeting in a house in Colorado Springs, a little silver Corvette that I still own to this day. He worked his ass off from the moment I became a reality in his world and he didn’t quit until his body could no longer keep up. He instilled many values in me that I hold dear…the ability to speak volumes without one word, the ability to remain calm and collected when the world was burning down around him, and the ability to resist the urge to choke the living shit out of someone who was rubbing that last nerve raw. (I’m especially thankful for that one, as I’m sure I came close to earning a full-on Homer Simpson throttling a time or ten.) He assisted me through my frustrations, stood by my side when I was facing down my own fears, and was always in my corner even when I couldn’t see that for myself.

Father’s Day is more than a chance to break out the grilling equipment, an opportunity to force the kid to mow the lawn or, if you’re really sadistic, the perfect moment to hand him a tie you knew damn well he’d never wear. It’s when you look at the man who did everything in his power to raise you up right and respectable, the man who would bury his boot in your ass if you needed it or would sit and listen while you poured your heart out. Truth be told, it took a village to raise this idiot, but in that picture is my father, Robert, who has been gone for a while now. One of the many things I wonder throughout the years is what he would make of this whole BangShift deal…he passed on shortly after my first tour of Iraq. He knew I was a gearhead, he knew cars were a priority, but he would’ve never seen this coming. I could just imagine what he’d do with the livestream chat.

Today, remember your dad. Call him. Go see him. Treat the old man to a beer…after bringing you up, he could probably use one. Actually talk with him. Listen to the wisdom, share the stories you both will laugh at. Lots of people remember the good times as kids, but if your pops is still up and kicking, return the favor and show him some love today. On behalf of Brian and Chad, happy Father’s Day to all of you out there.

Back On The Buick: Here’s A Lost Episode Of The Hagerty Straight Eight Redline Rebuild Series

We’ve been jonesing for an update on the Hagerty Buick Straight Eight Redline Rebuild project from Hagerty of late. With the whole social distancing and other junk it’s stopped a lot of these projects in their tracks. Thankfully there was some footage that had been overlooked and has not been found. This episode takes us back to the machine shop and shows a few interesting things regarding the cylinder head  that is going back on the engine.

Between the CC work that is done, the porting and polishing, and other touching that’s handled on the head, the different in volume is interesting. There’s actually some CC volume to be made back with a fresh set of modern valves as the factory ones have a huge dish in them and actually add a fairly large amount of volume to the chamber.

This is neat stuff as we have never messed with an inline eight. Having not been down this road before we get the feeling that we learn something from every one of the series videos. This engine has been a toughie since the start of the project but the progress, while slow, is being made.

The head looks at lot better at the end than at the start. Sporty!

Historical Drag Racing Video: Mario Andretti Drag Racing For The Only Time In His Life At Connecticut Dragway!

This right here is some stuff! The first part of the video seems to date from the first half of the 1960s but the last half comes from 1968 and there’s one really specific way that we know that. This is rare footage of Mario Andretti drag racing for the only time in his life at Connecticut Dragway in 1968.

You will see him landing on the strip in a little Cessna, hanging out with the trophy queen and ultimately see him making laps in a Mustang on behalf of Tasca Ford! Andretti ran a match race against track owner Frank Maratta who is driving a Camaro prepared by Norwood Chevrolet. To double down on the awesome, the car that Andretti is likely a Tasca KR8, the car that the production Cobra Jet Mustangs were based off of! Surely they would not have stuck Mario in some 390 powered Mustang, right? He got the good stuff we’re sure.

There’s plenty of other fun stuff to be seen here in the form of wheel standers and loads of awesome cars but the real story if Mario. Recently on television he talked about this particular day and his memories all these years later are 100% spot on, the video proves it! You will see him fly in around the 13:00 minute mark and his runs against Maratta are shown around the 15:00 mark.

Drag racing history in living color!

Does The Supra Have A Super Future: Our 13-Year Old Analyst Looks Into The Crystal Ball To See!

(By Tom Lohnes) – The 5th generation of the Toyota Supra is not without its haters. The Supra which shares its basic chassis and engine with the BMW Z4 is a solid contender in the modern sports car segment. For 2021, Toyota bumps power up from 335 to 382 and is offering a 4-cylinder turbo version. Reports also say that Toyota will have a different variant of the Supra for every year of it’s generation, and then at the end we have some speculation for the 6th gen Supra. So, without further delay let’s get into it.

For 2021, Toyota revised the 5th gen, (A90) Supra, and made the generation 5.1 (A91) Supra, with its own special edition the A91 edition. This is basically the launch edition to the 2020 A90 Supra. The A91 edition is just an appearance package, but it offers a new color, decal, and a carbon-fiber spoiler, so that’s cool. But the bulk of the A91 update comes with the Supra 2.0. Like the naturally aspirated version of the A80 Supra, the 2.0 comes with around 250 horsepower and a mid-6-second 0-60 time. The Supra 2.0 slots between the Nimble little Toyota 86, and the legitimate sports car, the Supra 3.0. For next year, Toyota is expected to add either a 6-speed manual option or a track-focused variant of the already potent Supra 3.0. The three years after that, I’m not sure what will happen, but it is expected in 2026 the last year for the A90 Supra we will see a high-horsepower TRD variant just like the A80 had in its last year.

Now, what will happen after that? Well, with the backlash of the BMW-based A90, Toyota is likely developing a new JZ engine in conjunction with Yamaha. If the A100 Supra goes through, expect a 3jz-GTE powered Supra, that will probably cost a lot, but have great potential.
