FE Race And Reunion Photos: Muscle Cars, Trucks, Gassers, And More From Beaver Springs

Joe Grippo does a fine job finding all the cool events to visit and shoot photos at. Of course for anyone that likes engines, the unique and cool Ford FE is one that deserves some cool attention. Thankfully this cool event at Beaver Springs Dragway celebrates all that is FE so check out Joe’s write-up and photos below.

(Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) The FE Ford engine has been obviously out of production for, what, 40 plus years? Yet there is a group the hardest of hardcore devotees who once a year gather in the hills of Central Pennsylvania at a quaint little dragstrip, to celebrate all variants of this famed FoMoCo mill. From 352’s to 390’s to the mighty Cobra Jets and Cammers, plus all the other displacements were in the house, at Beaver Springs Dragway.

The FE’s were smoking the rear tires and yanking the fronts skyward for like 3 days straight! Big mid-century 60’s muscle, Fairlane’s, Mustangs and trucks filled the pits and the show field right alongside a bunch of late model Fords with the venerable big block transplanted into them. It’s truly Nirvana for Ford fanatics, it is a sight to behold. A few Ford legends who made their bones with the FE Ford were in the house and holding court. Ohio George Montgomery, Al Joniec and John Vermeersch among others were telling stories and answering questions non-stop. The swap meet was robust with blocks, heads, intakes, cranks and everything else FE related just waiting to get scarfed up for the next build.

If you even remotely dig Fords and if you own an FE, you owe it to yourself to be on the Beaver property in 2022 for the 10th (TENTH!) annual FE Race and Reunion. You will not regret it, but don’t take our word for it, check out the galleries and see for yourself.

Motion Raceworks Rocky Mountain Race Week Daily Coverage: Day One Action From Thunder Valley

Rocky Mountain Race Week is in the books, and we were traveling the route with all these folks so we could bring you the FREE livestream that we had going all week long. It was a week full of fun, adventures, carnage, and more, but even if you were there you wouldn’t have been able to see it all. There is that much going on! But thanks to the folks at Motion Raceworks we’ve got more cool video coverage from the entire week and we’re going to share it all with you one day at a time. They were on-site with their parts merch trailer and were helping people out with great stuff all week long. This is the first video from Day One at Thunder Valley in Noble Oklahoma, which means everyone is racing and there is no on road carnage or anything yet. This is the day where everyone thinks everything is great and that they can win this whole thing. Spirits are high. At least until the racing gets going.

Why? Because some of these poor folks are going to tear their stuff up before they ever get to leave the first track. The good news is that they have all night to work on them because we don’t leave for the next track until the next morning, and the drive isn’t horrible from Thunder Valley to the Texas Motorplex in Ennis. Plus, there is the World’s Largest Summit Racing Equipment store on the way and it’s full of great parts to fix most anything.

Between Summit and the Motion Raceworks trailer full of parts, there was no shortage of new stuff going on hot rods Sunday night.

Here is the video description:

Burndown Breakdown: Here’s The Definitive History Of The Greatest NHRA Burndown Ever, Carbone vs Garlits 1971

As the drag racing world still buzzes over the Mason McGaha/Bruno Massel starting line show at Topeka a couple weeks ago, NHRA’s Phil Burgess decided to do a deep dive into the greatest burndown of all time. The final round of the 1971 NHRA US Nationals was three years in the making. Don Garlits, the king of the sport by the time 1971 came around and scrappy Steve Carbone who had built himself into a champion level top fuel racer as well. There was one problem for Carbone, he kept taking lumps from Garlits. So, like any good competitor, he made a plan.

The detail and backstory shared here is incredible and really makes you understand why these two otherwise mentall tough racers went full psycho on each other. It was the final round of top fuel. It was a slingshot taking on a rear engine car, it was the biggest name in Garlits, and it was a guy who wanted to beat him so bad he’d do anything to try.

And he did.

Great read: The definitive story on the greatest burndown in NHRA history

Romping Stomping Historic Video: Check Out This Amazing Footage Of Drag Racing Legends In 427 Comets And Thunderbolts

Like so many awesome developments in Ford’s 1960s drag racing history, Tasca Ford can claim some credit for the creation of what would be known as the Thunderbolt. They started by stuffing a 406 into a Fairlane in 1962 and followed it up with a 427 in another Fairlane in 1963 and ultimately that effort culminated in Ford seizing the chance to expand on the idea by creating the legendary Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt in 1964. These are my favorite factory drag cars of all time and they can still be found terrorizing the strip at NHRA national events and at other meets across the country. Back in the 1960s it was a matter of drag strip survival that these cars were made to exist. After being beat up by the Pontiacs and Mopars of the same time frame and seeing efforts like the lightweight Galaxies come up short, they had to do something. Boy did they ever.

Getting these cars into the specific hands of the best racers in the Ford fold changed the game. In this video you will see guys like Dyno Don Nicholson, Bill Lawton, Butch Leal, Ronnie Sox, Jack Chrisman, Al Joniec, and others plying the trade on drag strips large and small (mostly small) across the country.

The video is not just Thunderbolts, though. In fact it opens with amazing footage of Chrisman in the famed Sachs and Sons Mercury Comet with its blown engine smoking the tires of an eternity at the US Nationals. The 8mm footage is backed with some tunes but wow is this whole thing awesome. The Sachs and Sons cars is called the first funny car by many and when we look at what happened in 1965, it’s hard to argue. 1964 was awesome but 1965 was bonkers with multiple fuel burning, blown, stock bodied cars hitting drag strips and drawing massive crowds. About a half dozen of them showed up at the nationals that year and were relegated to the B/Fuel Dragster category because at that time, anything that ran on nitro was lumped into a dragster category and relegated by weight.

If you love the raw history of Ford performance, you will love this video. Seeing these OG 427 Comets and Thunderbolts throwing down is just great. Lots of Chrysler products in the other lane of these runs which is exactly what the Blue Oval gang was hoping for. It was drag strip war.

(Photos by Mike & Jeff Burghardt and Timothy Heather – Words courtesy of NHRA Communications) – Billy and Steve Torrence powered to the top two spots in Top Fuel on Saturday during qualifying at the 20th annual Dodge NHRA Finals presented by Pennzoil at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, bringing S. Torrence a step closer to his third straight world championship.

Ron Capps (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also No. 1 qualifiers at the Dodge NHRA Finals presented by Pennzoil, which is the final race of the 2020 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.

Torrence went 3.728-seconds at 325.30 mph in his 11,000-horsepower Capco Contractors dragster, with his son, Steve, a step behind at 3.731 at 330.39. It is B. Torrence’s third career No. 1 qualifier and first this season. Should S. Torrence win his first-round matchup on Sunday against Kebin Kinsley, he will claim a Top Fuel world title for the third consecutive year. He clinched his first world title at Las Vegas two years ago and now has an opportunity to do it again in 2020 to keep his incredible run going.

“I saw my old man keep on rolling down through there, so I knew it was on a good run, but we’ll just go out and do what we need to do tomorrow,” S. Torrence said. “We need to go rounds. We don’t need to worry about what the points are and who we have. We just need to go rounds tomorrow.”

Doug Kalitta qualified third with a run of 3.746 at 327.74. To claim his first world championship, he’ll need to win the race and have S. Torrence lose in the opening round.

In Funny Car, Ron Capps picked up his first No. 1 qualifier of 2020 and 25th in his career, powering to the top spot with a run of 3.902 at 327.98 in his 11,000-horsepower NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. He will take on rookie Chris Morel (above) in the first round of eliminations as Don Schumacher Racing seeks its 14th straight victory in the class and a sweep of the 2020 season.

His strong run bumped teammate Matt Hagan to the second spot, as the points leader looks to claim his third career world title. Hagan ran 3.911 at 327.82 and he’ll meet Cruz Pedregon to start raceday. He leads DSR teammates Tommy Johnson Jr. and Jack Beckman by 45 and 52 points, respectively, heading into eliminations. Johnson qualified fourth with a 3.915 at 319.14 and Beckman starts raceday from the 10th position. With the race being a points-and-a-half scenario, a round win is worth 30 points, meaning Johnson or Beckman would have to finish two rounds ahead of Hagan to win a title.

The Summit Racing Equipment/KB Racing Pro Stock team of Greg Anderson and Jason Line impressed during qualifying on Saturday, with Anderson taking the top spot and Line, who has championship aspirations in the final race of his Pro Stock career, following in second. Anderson went 6.601 at 206.73 in his Chevrolet Camaro to claim his second No. 1 qualifier this season and 106th in his standout career. He’s also an eight-time Vegas winner and opens eliminations against Aaron Strong.

Line, meanwhile, will head into race day second after going 6.635 at 206.39. That brings him to within 47 points of leader and defending world champ Erica Enders heading into eliminations. Enders struggled on Saturday and qualified 12th, and will take on Elite Motorsports teammate Alex Laughlin in the first round as she seeks back-to-back world titles. The third championship contender, Jeg Coughlin Jr., qualified ninth and is 55 points behind Enders heading into Sunday, which is also his final race in his storied Pro Stock career.

Following his win last weekend, Eddie Krawiec continues to stay hot in Pro Stock Motorcycle, vaulting to the No. 1 spot with a track record run of 6.818 at 198.12 on his Harley-Davidson FXDR. It is Krawiec’s second No. 1 qualifier — his first came at the opening race of the season — and the 48th in his career. The victory last weekend in Houston kept him in championship contention and he’ll open eliminations against Cory Reed, trailing leader Matt Smith by 80 points.

Smith (above) qualified second with a 6.821 at 198.38 and he’ll take on Krawiec’s teammate, three-time champion Angelle Sampey, in the first round. Joey Gladstone qualified third with a 6.893 at 195.56. Scotty Pollacheck, who is 86 points behind teammate Smith, remains in contention as well after taking the fourth spot with a run of 6.900 at 196.04.

In the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service, Khalid alBalooshi qualified No. 1 for the third time in 2020, going 5.755 at 248.34 in his ProCharger-powered Bahrain 1 Racing Camaro. Points leader Brandon Snider took the second spot at the race, which is presented by Strutmasters.com, with a run of 5.766 at 248.71. He’ll open eliminations against Brandon Pesz and started the weekend with a 26-point lead over defending world champion Stevie “Fast” Jackson, who qualified fifth. Should both Snider and Jackson win their first-round matchups, they would meet in the second round with the winner getting a bye to the final round.

Eliminations for the Dodge NHRA Finals presented by Pennzoil begin at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday. Live television coverage, with host Brian Lohnes, starts at 4 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 (FS1).

No Mercy 11 Action Photo Coverage: More Awesome Cars, Awesome Launches, and Awesome Images From SGMP

(Photos by Wes Allison) – It does not take a doctorate degree to figure out why people love drag radial style drag racing. Simply flip through these photos and you will see a load of killer cars that look…LIKE CARS. From Tommy Youman’s Pontiac GTO to Shane Stack’s Monte Carlo and a host of others, this are identifiable cars and they are all that plus they’re haul ass fast.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the original running of the Sweet 16 was pushed back to effectively butt right up against No Mercy so it was dubbed “Duck Week” at SGMP and all indications are that a good time was had by all. Lots of competitors stayed to run both races and by doing that, got a lot of runs in through test sessions and qualifying for the two events.

We were there for the No Mercy portion of the extravaganza and as you’ll see here, the cars were flying, the track was prepped, and drag radial fans sure got their money’s worth from the stands. Good stuff!

Upgrading the spindles that underpin your car and play and integral role in the function and performance of your car is a pretty easy job that can have massive effects on the driving dynamics of the vehicle. Choosing the right material, choosing the right construction, the right drop, and the right fitment are super important. If you are going for a max effort style car, a cruiser, or simply looking to get the front end down a coupe of inches, Chris Alston’s Chassisworks has what you need.

They offer spindles in a variety of heights and construction methods for the most popular Ford and GM models you can think of. These are not one size fits all solutions. The offerings are designed to reach a wide range of potential customers.

Spindles that are designed with the latest analytical software modeling to make them the strongest and lightest that they can be are the pieces that anyone who competes in autocross or even track day fun would want. Improving the geometry and making the car work better are the goals, all while reducing weight along the way. There are high quality drop spindles as well that get you that aggressive look that you want, all while making sure that the driving element of the car is not reduced.

Hit the image of the spindle below to check out Chris Alston’s Chassisworks spindle selection. It’s huge!

Watch a Fourth Gen Camaro Snap All 10 Wheel Studs and Lose Both Rear Wheels at the Strip!

Wheel hop is one of the most violent sensations that you can experience in a relatively stock car. Anyone who has owned a Mustang Cobra of the SN195 variety has probably lived through it on the street or the strip. We sure know that we have. Instead of a Mustang, this video features a fourth generation Camaro experiencing severe wheel hop on the drag strip, which results in the wheel studs on both side of the rear axle failing and the rear tires leaving the program in pretty wild fashion. The poor guy in the car had to be wondering what the heck had just happened!

This video was filmed at Beaver Springs Dragway, in Pennsylvania. It is an awesome little strip that is totally retro and cool in just about every way. The place hooks like mad and “Beaver Bob” who runs the place is a kind of cult drag racing legend. You can actually see daylight under the rear tires as they literally bounce off the ground while spinning. The multiple shock loads placed on those wheel studs with the tire the jumping off the asphalt and then slamming back down so many times in so quick a fashion spelled a quick end for the studs.

Watch the whole video and you’ll see that the dude actually installed new studs at the track that day and was back at it by the end of the afternoon. That’s a killer, BangShift approved, never say die attitude! Good that the car was not hurt badly and the Camaro lived to fight another day!

We Hit The Starting Line At Bonneville Speed Week 2020! Action Starts Right Here!

It’s that time folks! Racing has finally started at Bonneville Speed Week and we are so excited about the racing action that we couldn’t help but snag some photos to share all the greatness. With cars making their first passes down the salt Saturday morning, it was time to see just what the salt could handle and how much power everyone had to throw at it. Remember, make one hit over a record speed and you are going to Impound for inspection and certifications so that you can back it up the next morning for an official record. The earlier to you qualify for the record, the earlier you can pack up the trailer and start the drinking and socializing. You also get to limit your exposure to the hot Utah sun if you so choose.

We’re excited to see everything from a Roadster to the Speed Demon Streamliner going after big numbers. We’ll see how conditions manifested today and how many guys and gals can back it up tomorrow to take the record. Once again we’re sad not to be there ourselves this year, but luckily our dude Wes Allison was able to make things happen and show us all the hot action and cool cars that showed up this year.
